Texas is known for being one of the biggest states in the country, but it is also known for another thing, conventions. That’s right, Texas plays home to a number of different conventions, events and trade shows like the Dallas Comic-Con and the TARA Convention. Another big annual convention that takes place in Texas is ArmadilloCon. ArmadilloCon is an annual science fiction convention held in Austin, Texas.
ArmadilloCon started back in 1979 and is the second longest running science fiction convention in Texas and is sponsored by the Fandom Association of Central Texas. The convention is known for its emphasis on literary science fiction among other science fiction related topics and events.
ArmadilloCon was traditionally held in mid-October during the weekend of the Texas-OU football game. But everybody knows how much Texans love their football, so the convention moved to a late summer/early fall weekend in 1998. Like I mentioned earlier, ArmadilloCon generally focuses on literary science fiction with special guests of the event and honorees typically being up-and-coming writers. ArmadilloCon typically has unique programming like a “Fannish Feud” which has become a regular event since the 4th ArmadilloCon back in 1982.
Fannish Feud is frequently hosted by Pat Cadigan, Walter Jon Williams and Rhonda Eudaly, and the convention usually ends with a story reading by Howard Waldrop. Needless to say, ArmadilloCon is the premier event for anybody who loves science fiction, especially people who love science fiction literature. It is a great place for fans of the genre to interact and mingle as well as buy, sell and trade books, memorabilia, get autographs or even try to get their own stories out to an eager public fan base.
The 2011 ArmadilloCon is set to take place from August 26 to August 28, 2011, at the Renaissance Hotel in Austin, Texas. If you love science fiction and science fiction literature, then you do not want to miss out on one of the biggest events in Texas.
